Douglas County Completes Breakwater Safety Enhancement at Topaz Lake Campground Boat RampMinden, NV- Douglas County is pleased to announce the completion of the Topaz Lake Campground boat ramp breakwater project ahead of schedule and under budget. On March 25, 2020 the Parks Department received authorization to apply for Federal grant funds that are administered through the State of Nevada Department of Wildlife. The grant was to install a custom engineered floating log breakwater at the Topaz Lake Campground Boat Ramp to provide significant safety upgrades during high wind and wave conditions. Douglas County was awarded the grant for $393,000.00 and began the design work in preparation for construction.

Topaz Lake is a reservoir operated by the Walker River Irrigation District. As it is a reservoir, the water levels will have significant variations and will also be prone to high wind conditions. The wind conditions have caused numerous incidents for boaters attempting to launch or retrieve their watercraft. The breakwater is 360 feet long and contains a warning light system for safe nighttime boating operations. The custom engineered floating log breakwater is anchored by nineteen 12,000lb concrete anchors and moored by high-strength cable and chains to keep it in place. It is meant to protect the boat ramp during high wind conditions regardless of the lake level. The breakwater was installed by Impact Construction a local general contractor.
