Douglas County has been responding to several reports of minor flooding in the Carson Valley. We have also seen water and minor debris on the roadways in many areas. Douglas County Emergency Management continues to survey the area along with Douglas County road crews and law enforcement. Residents may not see a crew in their community immediately; however, dispatch will be responding to all calls based on priority. Residents can report flooding in Douglas County by calling (775)782-5126.
Key Weather Points
• Snow levels falling today: Sierra passes will begin to transition to snow by late morning, lake level early afternoon. Expect travel impacts to worsen through the day as rain transitions to snow. The transition to snow will help mitigate urban flooding threat from snow/debris filled drains for mountain communities. A rain/snow mix is possible for W.NV valleys by this evening.
• High winds expected later today: Rain will subdue winds this morning across valley locations, but still expecting strong and gusty winds to materialize by late this afternoon and evening once we get a lull in the current push of rain and snow.
• Western Nevada Snow: A rain/snow mix is possible by early this evening, but the main threat for accumulating snow is expected tonight into Friday morning as a cold front lowers snow levels to all valley floors. Several inches of accumulating snow may result in travel impacts for Western NV valleys Friday morning through the Highway 395/I580 corridor including Reno, Carson City, Carson Valley. A couple of inches are also possible along I-80/Hwy 50 corridor.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS
• Turn around,don't drown when encountering flooded roads. In hilly terrain there are hundreds of low water crossings which are potentially dangerous in heavy rain. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.
• Secure lose objects in your yard including your trash cans.
• Take your time during commute hours when weather can impact travel.
Road Closures
We have opened Centerville Lane.
The National Weather Service has issued a high wind warning
to remain in effect until 10 pm this evening, including Gardnerville . Winds
will be south to southwest 20-30 mph with gusts to 50-60 mhp. Wind prone
locations including the Hwy 395/I80 corridor could see gusts of 60-70 mhp.

Centerville Ln. is closed from 88 to Foothill Rd due to flooding. Only residents who live in the area will be allowed access. Please do not drive through the flooded water.

Low water crossings are also bringing water across roadways in some
locations. The Douglas County Sheriff’s
Office and Road Department is currently out monitoring flood prone areas. Residents
may not see a crew in their community immediately; however, Douglas County Road
Crews and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department will be responding to all
calls based on priority. Residents can report flooding in Douglas County by

Additional heavy rainfall
this afternoon may cause rises on smaller creeks and streams throughout the
region with minor urban flooding possible. There will be a break in the
precipitation intensity this evening, but additional heavy rainfall is likely
tomorrow before snow levels once again fall.

rainfall will cause flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas,
highways, streets and underpasses as well as other drainage areas and low lying
spots.

Douglas County is urging residents to prepare for the possibility of flooding and high winds. A storm is coming Wednesday and Thursday which could potentially cause flooding for snow-clogged drainage areas, poor drainage areas, and small streams below 6000 feet, however no rivers have been predicted to flood at this time. Strong winds are also expected Wednesday through Thursday. Residents might also expect intermittent road closures due to flooding. All residents should pay attention to local media and weather alerts and should prepare an emergency kit for their family.
Douglas County has sandbags available at nine locations and urges residents to assemble them on their property if there is a chance of flooding. Sandbag locations can are self-fill and the current locations are:

How can residents prepare?
• Snow Mitigation: Do as much cleanup from weekend storm as possible. Reducing snow load on structures. Clearing snow from drains and gutters.
• Evaluate “Plan-B” travel options over the Sierra (snow/rain) and wind prone valleys Wednesday-Thursday.
• Secure loose objects, construction equipment, trash cans ahead of potential strong winds.
• Clear areas prone to ponding water and mud.
