Douglas County Department of Indigent Defense
The Douglas County Department of Indigent Defense has the mission to provide equality before the law for all persons. Further, the mission of the Department is to ensure that those accused of crime, or otherwise eligible for services of an appointed attorney, will not be deprived of any element of representation necessary to an adequate defense because the accused are financially unable to pay for adequate representation. The Department contracts with 5 attorneys under annual contracts and approximately 12 additional attorneys under hourly contracts to provide representation to persons accused of crimes. The nature of the cases assigned include allegations from minor misdemeanors to the highest level of felonies under Nevada law, including capital cases, for both adults and juveniles. Representation occurs in the Ninth Judicial District Court, the East Fork Township Justice Court and the Tahoe Township Justice Court. The Department also facilitates representation for persons involved in child welfare cases before the District Court. Representation in such cases is provided for Parents and Children.
