Community Services Department Named Finalist for Cashman Good Government Award

Gardnerville, NV – The Douglas County Community Services Department has been named a Finalist for the 28th Annual Cashman Good Government Award. The Cashman Good Government Award honors government entities and individuals who put workplace experience together with ingenuity to make citizen services work better, faster, and cheaper.

The Community Services Department submitted the Warrior Way parking program—an initiative launched by the Department in 2024—for consideration for the award. The program began as a response to issues of overcrowding and pollution that had occurred in previous years at Lake Tahoe, specifically during busy holiday weekends such as the Fourth of July. The program is designed to address overcrowding issues and trash, while improving beach user experience. As a result, the revenue earned from this program is a shared venture between Douglas County Community Services, the Douglas County School District, and the Whittell High School, and Zephyr Cove Parents Group. All agencies contribute resources to the program and share in the revenue that it generates. The program charges for parking at Lake Tahoe based on need and demand and allows Douglas County residents to park for free to be able to better access the Lake.

Finalists for the award are recognized in six categories, based on population size and organization type. The Community Services Department was named as a Finalist in the “County/School District under 400,000” category.

This is third time the Community Services Department was recognized by the Nevada Taxpayers Association. In 1997, the department received a Finalist Award for innovations in privatization of Recreation Facilities. In 2023, the department received a finalist award for its innovative approach to long-term care costs for Senior Citizens.
