Community Arts Center to Welcome Transformational Public Mural Beginning August 3

The Community Arts Center will soon become home to a vibrant new public mural as internationally recognized artist Rafael Blanco begins work on the WALLS mural project on August 3. The large-scale artwork will transform the exterior of the former Carson Valley Cinemas into a welcoming visual landmark celebrating creativity, culture, and community.
Approved by the Planning Commission on July 14, the mural will be painted August 3–16 while the theater remains open and continues showing movies seven days a week.
Designed specifically for the Community Arts Center, the mural reflects the site's evolution from a beloved movie theater into a dynamic cultural destination. Featuring imagery representing music, dance, and the visual arts, the site-specific design responds to the building's history, architecture, and future as a gathering place for arts and culture, creating an inspiring gateway for residents and visitors alike.
"Public art has the power to bring people together and create a lasting sense of place," said Community Services Director Brook Adie. "This mural reflects the Community Arts Center's evolution into a destination where creativity, culture, and community come together. We invite everyone to watch the artwork take shape and celebrate this exciting milestone with us."
Community members are encouraged to visit during the installation and attend two special public events:

As part of the National Night Out Block Party, the mural artist and the project's documentarian will be on-site to meet community members, discuss the project, and capture the event on film. The evening will also feature family-friendly activities, food vendors, entertainment, and a free outdoor movie experience.
Ribbon Cutting Ceremony – Friday, August 14 | 1 p.m.

Community members, local leaders, and the media are invited to celebrate the completion of this milestone project with an official ribbon-cutting ceremony recognizing the Community Arts Center's continued transformation into Douglas County's premier destination for arts, culture, and community.
The WALLS mural is expected to become a signature landmark for the Community Arts Center, creating a vibrant public space that reflects the creativity and spirit of the Carson Valley community. The mural is being funded through a grant from Visit Carson City and represents the first step toward the long-term vision for a Community Arts Center. While the mural has secured funding, plans for the Community Arts Center have not yet been finalized, nor has funding been secured for its transformation.
